International Workshop on Adressing and Assessing Sexual Harassment of Women in Academia
On October 27th and 28th, The Académie des sciences hosted in Paris an international workshop organized by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) and the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), dedicated to tackling sexual harassment within the scientific academic community.

The two-day event brought together researchers, experts, and professionals from around the world — including Australia, Egypt, Ghana, New Zealand, Colombia, India, Jordan, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic — all actively engaged in promoting safe and equitable research environments. Discussions centered on definitions, impacts, and strategies to strengthen global efforts against sexual harassment, with a particular focus on the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
The workshop opened with remarks from Geneviève Almouzni, CNRS Research Director and Cell-ID PEPR director, member of the Académie des sciences and of the European Research Council.
The first day laid the conceptual groundwork for the discussions, addressing definitions across cultures and contexts, the impact of harassment on individuals and institutions, and the methodological challenges of gathering international data.
The second day featured national case studies from Australia, Colombia, Nigeria, France, India, and Jordan, showcasing a range of initiatives and best practices. Juliette Rochet, Director of the Department of Committees and Reports at the Académie des sciences, presented the 2024 report “Science: Where Are the Women?” produced by a working group co-chaired by Geneviève Almouzni and that included Patrick Flandrin, Delegate for Scientific Information and Communication, who also participated in the event.

The workshop concluded with a collective commitment to advancing the prevention of sexual harassment in academic and scientific settings worldwide. Participants reviewed and refined a shared engagement document, integrating insights and proposals developed throughout the two days of discussion.
